In 2018, Florida Legislature enacted Senate Bill 7026, which formed the
Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act. This Act created:
- The Office of Safe Schools within the Department of Education, whose primary goals include prevention, intervention and emergency preparedness planning.
- The Florida Safe Schools Assessment Tool (FSSAT) is offered through the Office of Safe Schools and, among several other requirements, identifies physical security measures.
- The creation of a School Safety Specialist for each school district. Tasked with the supervision of school safety measures within the school district, the School Safety Specialist must conduct a School Security Risk Assessment and provide recommendations to the school board and the Office of Safe Schools annually (pursuant to Florida Statutes Section 1006.07(6)(a)4).

This federal competitive award program is designed to provide funding to improve security at schools
through evidence based school safety programs that include several factors, including placement of
deterrent measures.
